Business owner plans free festive dinner for those facing Christmas Day alone

Council asked to waive venue fee as donations sought to help provide meal

Council has been asked to waive fees for use of Lurgan Park Pavilion as a venue to provide a free festive dinner for those who are facing Christmas Day alone.

A small business owner in the town has contacted Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council seeking support for the initiative.

The three-course meal will be provided on December 25 to those “who would otherwise have no company on Christmas Day”.

Council’s leisure committee had been asked to agree to waive the fees for the use of its property.

Councillors have been informed that a Lurgan small business owner “would like to reach out to the local community”.

A paper to committee explains: “They are proposing to provide a three course dinner to upwards of 50 people who otherwise would be eating alone on the day, and has chosen Lurgan Park, so both sides of the community would feel welcome to attend.

“The local small business owner requires the use of the main hall in Lurgan Park’s Bowling Pavilion to serve the dinner along with the kitchen for its preparation.

“The organisers are linking in with local businesses to get foodstuffs donated and has already secured the support of a local vegetable shop.”

Members of the family-owned business will serve the dinner between 1pm and 4pm.

Council will already have a member of staff on duty so councillors have been informed that there will be no additional cost.

Committee is expected to give the go-ahead for the dinner in the season of goodwill!

Further details of the initiative – depending on the outcome of the request to council – will be made available closer to the time.
