Concerns grow over safety and anti-social behaviour at derelict Lurgan school site

St Ronan's College in Lurgan

Young people are being urged to stay away from the old St Ronan’s College buildings on Edward Street in Lurgan.

Sinn Féin Councillor Mary O’Dowd said she had been contacted by worried residents who have witnessed groups of young people entering the derelict school premises.

It’s the latest anti-social concern regarding groups of young people in Edward Street area of the town.

“There are significant dangers within the old school buildings, including falling debris, broken glass and other hazards,” Cllr O’Dowd warned.

“I completely understand that young people may be curious or simply looking for somewhere to gather, but this site is not safe.

“I’d urge parents to speak with their children about the dangers and make sure they stay away from the site. Keeping them safe must be the top priority.”

The councillor confirmed she had been in touch with relevant agencies to ensure the vacant property is properly secured.

The latest concerns come on the back of summer issues in the Edward Street area where groups of youths were said to be causing “serious damage” to fast-food outlets, intimidating staff and customers, and vandalising stores.

Speaking at the time, Sergeant Murray, of the PSNI’s Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We would encourage parents and guardians to be aware of where their young people are and who they are with – and to warn them of the dangers of getting involved in this type of behaviour. Ultimately, they could end up with a criminal record which may impact their future employment and travel prospects.”
