An exciting new colourful charity event is due to be held in County Armagh this April – with proceeds going to a very worthy cause.
Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council agreed at its monthly meeting last night (Monday) to host the ‘Heart and Sole’ Colour Dash.
The 5k fun run/walk is a showcase event and will be the council’s first ‘Colour Run’.
The event will help raise funds for the British Heart Foundation’s ‘Mending Broken Hearts Appeal’ and support the ‘Craigavon Heart Town’ initiative, a partnership between council and the charity which aims to raise awareness of the risk factors for heart disease and fundraise for pioneering research.
The event will take place in Lurgan Park on the afternoon of Sunday, April 17, and will be open to all ages and abilities. It is expected to attract up to 750 participants, bringing community and visitors to the borough together in a celebration of life, health and happiness.
This event will be an untimed 5k run/walk, where participants pass through powder-throwing colour stations. At these stations different colours are thrown up in the air and shower participants at each kilometre.
On passing the finish line, all colour dash participants will be invited to join a colour party, with music and massive colour throws to create a rainbow of colour and an atmosphere of celebration.
Colour Run events have proven to be very popular, attracting a diverse range of people; first time runners, walkers, families, wheelchair users all want to participate in a colourful and fun event.
It is also anticipated that this event will attract individuals who are taking part in various ‘Couch to 5K’ programmes
If it proves popular, council – along with other partners – could consider making it an annual event.
It has been estimated that the event will cost between £8,000 and £9,000 with the majority of costs being met through participant registrations.
The Public Health Agency has agreed to contribute £1,000 and a few local sponsors have indicated they would be willing to provide goodie bags, water bottles, water and the finish line arch.
The council contribution will be £1000.
A donation resulting from the event will be given to the British Heart Foundation which will provide additional support for the local Craigavon Heart Town initiative.
