Pro-Palestinian graffiti adorned on a sign containing a Bible verse in Co. Down has been branded as ‘abhorrent’.

Over the Easter weekend, the words ‘Free Gaza’ appeared in red paint on the sign, which is located on the Dromore Road outside Waringstown.

Commenting on the incident, Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart said she hopes those responsible “reflect” on their actions.

She said: “At any time of the year this would be an abhorrent act, but to do so at a time when Christian’s are focusing on the resurrection of Christ is particularly crass.

“We have all watched the scenes unfolding in the Middle East and express our concern and compassion towards those who are suffering. To deface a sign displaying a Bible verse, does not advance any cause. I hope the people who did this reflect on their actions.”

She added: “The PSNI are aware of this incident and if anyone has any information that can shed any light on this I would urge them to come forward to the PSNI by calling 101 or the confidential phone number.  I will ensure the sign is cleaned urgently.”

A spokesperson for the PSNI said they received the report of criminal damage today (April 2) and enquiries are ongoing.
