Motorists using North Street Car Park in Lurgan can now enjoy their first hour free of charge, following a wave of complaints over the “sudden introduction” of charges earlier this year.

The change is aimed at encouraging people to shop locally while addressing frustration from drivers who said they were “unfairly caught out” previously.

In April, political representatives raised concerns after many residents received unexpected Parking Charge Notices.

Sinn Féin councillor Keith Haughian called for a grace period and better public information.

Councillor Haughian has now welcomed the new arrangements, which were agreed following discussions with parking operator Euro Parks.

“This is a positive and practical step that will support local businesses on North Street and in the surrounding area,” he said.

“By making it easier and more affordable for people to pop in and shop locally, this change will help drive footfall and give a boost to traders who are the backbone of our local economy.

“I want to thank Euro Parks for taking a partnership approach in addressing the concerns raised by myself and others. The introduction of a free hour is a direct response to those conversations and shows what can be achieved when there is meaningful engagement.”

Under the new system, motorists staying less than an hour will not need to use the pay station.

Those staying longer can pay via the app or at the pay station upon arrival by entering their vehicle registration number.

Councillor Haughian added: “This is a welcome and sensible change, and I hope it encourages even more people to support our town centre businesses.”
