Odhran Kelly vigil held in Lurgan

A vigil has been held in Lurgan on Wednesday night for local man Odhrán Kelly who was murdered at the weekend.

The poor weather didn’t keep people away from Edward Street – where Odhrán’s body was discovered close a burning car on Sunday (December 3).

Instead, it was a sea of umbrellas from before 6pm as hundreds gathered to pay their respects.

It was a poignant affair, briefly interrupted by an applause as an array of balloons were released.

An emotional mother Jacqui was comforted by her son Paul as the crowd joined in solemn prayer.

Other family members and friends wore t-shirts emblazoned with Odhrán’s face, placards too demanding justice for the young health worker.

Detectives from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team, who are carrying out a murder investigation following the discovery of the body in the town, officially named 23-year-old Odhrán this afternoon.

Odhrán, a nursing assistant at Craigavon Area Hospital, had been missing for several days.

Two women, aged 36 and 43, and a 31-year-old man, who were arrested on suspicion of murder, remain in custody at this time.

Mourners gathered tonight against a backdrop of dismay – in what has been the third murder in the Co. Armagh town in a year.

Meanwhile, the police investigation continues, with appeals released for those who may have any information to speak out.

In a statement released today, Detective Chief Inspector Tony Kelly said: “While our investigation is at an early stage, I do not believe there is an organised crime link.

“We do know that, tragically, Odhran’s body was found beside a burning car in the Maple Court area in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“I’m keen to speak with three people, who are captured on CCTV, walking not far from this car. I believe they may have information that could assist our investigation and would ask them to get in touch as soon as possible.

“If you were in the Edward Street or Francis Street areas of Lurgan between 2am and 5am on Sunday and noticed any suspicious activity, please contact us on 101.”
