A Lurgan man who is accused of assaulting his pregnant partner on two separate occasions has been refused bail.
Remanding the 24-year-old in custody, the district judge stated: “How can you allegedly treat the mother of your child like that and expect to be at the birth of that child?”
Shea Haughian, of Ardboe Drive, appeared for a bail application on two sets of charges at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday, via videolink from Maghaberry.
On the first, the defendant is charged with common assault, three counts of criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon on July 12, of this year.
He faces further charges of common assault, threats to kill and sending menacing messages via electronic communications on September 24 and 25.
None of the facts were opened in court, but on both occasions the alleged victim of the common assaults were the same female injured party.
Defence barrister Damien Halloran stated that the bail application was being made with his partner, the alleged injured party, being due to give birth in the near future.
District Judge Bernie Kelly commented: “How can you allegedly treat the mother of your child like that and expect to be at the birth of that child?
“I am dealing with two sets of charges here, the alleged offending in July for which he was granted bail and then, while on bail on September 25, he is alleged to have committed almost identical offences.”
Stating that she did not believe Haughian would adhere to bail conditions and that there was a risk of further offences, District Judge Kelly refused bail and the case was adjourned until November 11.
