Lurgan man arrested after ‘sickening’ footage of attack on young mum’s house goes viral

Lurgan video

Police have confirmed that a man was arrested in relation to an online video showing “sickening” sectarian abuse being hurled at the home of a young mother in Lurgan.

The video – captured on the doorbell’s camera – shows a man attempting to break the doorbell while shouting sectarian profanities and urging the “traumatised” young woman to come outside.

A police spokesperson said: “Officers investigating a reported hate crime in the Ashleigh Crescent area of Lurgan on Sunday, April 30 have made an arrest.

“A 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted criminal damage. He was later bailed to allow for further enquiries.”

Ulster Unionist leader Doug Beattie condemned the footage as “absolutely appalling” and said he would be contacting police himself to further follow up on the “threatening behaviour”.

Sinn Féin councillor Keith Haughian has also condemned the incident.

He said: “The police are investigating the attack which is clearly motivated by sectarian hatred.

“I would appeal for anyone who can help identify the culprits to pass that information onto the police.”
