Lurgan Town FC make club history as U13 girls emerge as Blackpool Cup champions!

'The girls represented the club with dignity, determination, integrity and respect as well as showing great skill and ability to come home as the Champions of Blackpool'

Lurgan Town Football Club entered a girls team into the Blackpool Cup for the first time in its history – and they walked away as Champions!

The club’s U13s girls travelled on Good Friday to participate in the tournament which kicked off on Saturday against Blantyre Celtic Greens (Scotland). Their first game of three ended on a draw, 2-2.

Next up was South Shore (England) which also ended level with a 0-0 scoreline.

But in their third and final game on Saturday the girls found their spark and ran out 12-0 winners against Blantyre Celtic Golds.

On day two, the girls showed real quality and determination as they faced another three, 40 minute games.

Their first opponents on the day were another Northern Irish team, Newhill. The girls raced into a 3-0 lead at half-time with Sienna, Isla and Julia scoring the goals. The game finished 3-0 which meant a win in the final group game would guarantee a place in the final.

Pollock (Scotland) were the opponents and the girls went on to win 4-1.

The girls now faced a final against the same opponents as game one, Blantyre Celtic Greens.

Blantyre topped the group. However, the Lurgan girls left their best performance to the last as they dominated the game to win 2-0 with goals from Sienna and Phoebe.

Lurgan Town girls finished the weekend as the Champions of Blackpool which happened to coincide with Lurgan Town Girls Academy celebrating its 10th Anniversary.

Club Head Coach Phil commented: “The girls represented the club with dignity, determination, integrity and respect as well as showing great skill and ability to come home as the Champions of Blackpool.

“The coaches provided the stable atmosphere for the team to perform to its best. Congratulations to all those involved. Champions!”
