Man jailed for assault tells district judge: ‘That’s OK, Bernie. Cheers. Take it easy.’

Defendant began smashing up his bedroom after mother refused to give him money

A Lurgan man told a judge “cheers, take it easy” as he was sentenced to three months in prison.

The 28-year-old, who represented himself in court, also said “ah sure why not?” as he entered pleas of guilty.

Reuben John Glen, of Colban Crescent, pleaded guilty to criminal damage, common assault and assault on police at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday, as he appeared via videolink from Maghaberry.

Court heard that on September 15 at around 10pm police were contacted by the injured party, the defendant’s mother.

She told officers Glen had came to her asking for money to buy drugs but when she refused the defendant began to smash up his bedroom and damaged a door.

Glen was arrested by police and taken to Lurgan custody Suite.

When interviewed the defendant became aggressive towards officers with him having to be restrained using handcuffs and limb restraints.

Court heard that one of the officers had been left with an injury to his hamstring.

District Judge Bernie Kelly told Glen “you have a very bad record for this type of offence”, as she sentenced him to three months in prison.

After he heard the verdict the defendant said: “That’s OK, Bernie. Cheers. Take it easy.”
