A man who punched his partner twice to the head after consuming alcohol has been sentenced to four months in prison.
Court heard that police were alerted to the incident after they were contacted by a child who reported that his uncle was hitting his wife.
Atanas Kazakov, 34, of Carrickvale Manor in Lurgan, pleaded guilty to one count of common assault at Craigavon Magistrates’ on Friday, via videolink from Maghaberry.
Prosecution outlined that on October 24, police were tasked to an address in Carrickvale Manor, Lurgan, following a report from a child that his uncle was hitting his wife.
Upon arrival, officers located this defendant with the injured party in an upstairs room.
Police spoke to the victim, who stated that her husband had entered the bedroom after consuming alcohol and had punched her twice to the head.
As a result of the attack, the female was left with brusing and swelling to the side of her head.
Defence barrister David McKeown stated: “The fact that he was drinking that night is not an excuse….he has learned a very salutary lesson as he has effectively served the maximum amount of time in custody for this offence.
“This was very, very foolish. This is a man with no record prior to this. It was also not helped by the fact that it was also in front of a child. The only thing really that I can say in his credit is that he made full admissions in interview.”
District Judge Bernie Kelly said: “There is absolutely no excuse for assaulting your partner. It is reprehensible behaviour and, given that you’ve already spent a considerable time in custody, I’m not ordering a pre-sentence report because that would only add further delay to the sentencing exercise.”
Kazakov was sentenced to four months in prison for the the offence before the court.
