McCartan Bet takes a punt on vacant retail unit on Lurgan high-street

The premises was formerly a shop unit and had operated as a 'Creative Hub' for a number of years between 2015 and 2018

An application has been lodged with Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council seeking permission to change a former retail unit into a bookies.

Plans were submitted in the main of Malachy McCartan – of McCartan Bet Bookmakers – for the second time in relation to 7 William Street, Lurgan.

The premises was formerly a shop unit and had operated as a ‘Creative Hub’ for a number of years between 2015 and 2018.

However, since the Creative Hub’s vacation of the building, it has since lain empty.

Mr McCartan is seeking a renewal of previously granted permissions, from back in 2021, that would see the ground floor of the premises converted into a bookmakers.

The proposals cover some 114.57m² of floorspace.

There is no indication in the application as to whether internal or external structural changes will be required to facilitate the change of use.

A ground floor plan shows a telesales area to the left of the street-front entrance and a public area with a clerk’s office and counter.

There is also provision for a public toilet alongside staff toilet and break room.

Emergency evacuation exits are provided to the rear of the building.

Plans will be advertised in due course.
