The last stage of a multi-million pound public realm scheme in Lurgan is due to be completed by the summer.

The work, as originally designed, was to be completed in three phases.

Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council has been informed that the third phase is now underway.

The first two phases of the two centre works had centred on areas including Market Street, High Street, William Street, Edward Street and North Street.

The current phase will complete the full scope of work originally envisaged for Lurgan town centre.

It includes Castle Lane, Carnegie Street, Union Street, Church Walk and Watson’s Lane.

Work will see the resurfacing of pathways, the installation of street furniture, undergrounding of overhead utility cables, and ‘soft landscaping’ within each street.

The scope of work in each location will depend on the width of the street.

McAdam Design has been appointed as the lead consultant, while Northstone have been appointed lead contractor.

Work started in Castle Lane at the beginning of February.

This included the undergrounding of overhead cables, before the contractor moved on to Watson’s Lane towards the end of last month.

Council has been informed the contractor is dealing directly with local traders and, while a “small number of issues” have been raised, solutions have been found in each instance.

The overall programme of work is expected to be completed by July or August.
