Tributes paid to ‘gentleman’ Lurgan builder who always went ‘that extra yard’

'I remember dealing with Davy when he built our house, he would always go that extra yard to accommodate you or chop and change things for you, nothing was a problem for him'

Tributes have been paid following the death of a “gentleman” Lurgan builder – known across the county and beyond for both his kindness and professionalism.

David Gilmore, the founder of D Gilmore Developments, sadly passed away peacefully in hospital on April 28.

According to an interview with Building Ireland magazine in 2024, David’s company was known as an “industry-leading” private housing developer and builder.

Speaking to the publication at that time, he said it was “all go” with his family-run company, which is headquartered in his hometown of Lurgan.

They said that since its inception in 1989, the renowned contractor and developer’s name has been “associated with some of Northern Ireland’s most sought-after private housing developments”.

He was known for remarkable workmanship in the Silverwood Avenue, Lurgan, and Old Kilmore Road, Moira, developments, among countless others.

Through his company, he employed, both directly and indirectly, approximately 50 staff and was joined in the family business by his son Richard and daughter Lynn.

In paying their respects following his death, many former customers and homeowners of David’s properties have spoken of his memorable character.

One person said: “I remember dealing with Davy when he built our house. He would always go that extra yard to accommodate you or chop and change things for you; nothing was a problem for him. Condolences to the entire family circle during this difficult time.”

Another added: “Sorry to see this post this morning. He was a gentleman and was a pleasure to deal with when purchasing our first home! Rest easy.”

Those who knew him beyond the property industry knew him as a “gentleman”, a compassionate person always ready to offer a helping hand.

“So sorry to hear this. David was a pure gentleman,” said one. “He was very kind to me over the years and I will always remember his kindness. Thinking of his family at this very sad time.”

He was a deeply respected and much-loved character within his local community. For many, they say, it was a “privilege” to know him.

A death notice described David as the dearly loved husband of Ann, cherished father of Lynn (Shane), Richard and Jonathan, and loving grandfather of Corey, Chloe and Emily.

His funeral service will take place in St Saviour’s Church, Dollingstown, on Thursday, April 30, at 2pm, followed by interment in Magheralin Parish Churchyard.

Donations, if desired, may be made for Friends of the Cancer Centre and Air Ambulance NI, c/o Malcomsons Funeral Service, 7 Robert Street, Lurgan.
