A young boy from Lurgan stole the spotlight at Katy Perry’s sold-out Belfast concert on Sunday night after the pop superstar invited him onto the stage for a hilarious and heart-warming exchange.
The global megastar was performing the final night of her Lifetimes World Tour at the SSE Arena when she spotted the young fan, Dara McSherry, in the crowd and asked him to join her under the lights.
What followed had the Belfast audience in stitches.
“What’s your name?” Perry asked.
“Dara,” came the reply.
“Where are you from?”
“Lurgan.”
Perry, clearly puzzled, asked: “What the hell is Lurgan?”
“In Armagh,” Dara responded, prompting Perry to fire back with another question: “What is Armagh?”
The crowd erupted in laughter as Perry continued, “Is it Largan?” — before Dara confidently corrected her, emphasising the “u” in Lurgan. Perry then mimicked his pronunciation, sending the audience into further fits of laughter.
But the night got even better for young Dara when the singer asked, “What are you going to be when you grow up?”
Without missing a beat, he replied: “A singer.”
Perry handed him the microphone — and to the delight of thousands, Dara – along with Perry – began singing one of her own songs, Daisys. The crowd cheered and clapped along as the Lurgan boy lived out every young fan’s dream.
As the moment was shared across social media overnight, fans hailed Dara as a “superstar” and “a lucky duck,” with many praising Perry for giving the youngster a memory to last a lifetime.
It’s safe to say Katy Perry — and the rest of Belfast — won’t be forgetting Lurgan anytime soon.
Dara’s school, St Ronan’s in Lurgan described him as a “a star in the making.”
“We are absolutely thrilled to celebrate our wonderful pupil Dara McSherry 8JS, who had the incredible opportunity to perform on stage with global superstar Katy Perry at the weekend in Belfast!
“Dara is a superbly talented young musician who represents our College with distinction in a range of musical activities.
“His passion, dedication, and talent continue to shine, and we couldn’t be prouder to see him share the spotlight with one of the world’s biggest pop icons.
“This is only the beginning of Dara’s stardom – we’re certain his name will be in lights in the future! Well done, Dara! You’re an inspiration to us all.”
