A long-standing Lurgan-based playgroup have announced their regrettable closure just days before the commencement of the new academic year.
Via social media, the North Lurgan Playgroup’s management committee said with “regret and sadness” they would not be returning to their normal operations for financial reasons.
They explained: “Numerous efforts were made to improve the financial stability of the playgroup, however, unfortunately, these were unsuccessful due to the continuous decline in the number of pre-school-aged children registering for the 2026/2027 school year.”
The team took the time to thank the families who had utilised their services over the years, commenting on their “kindness, support and commitment”.
“We are incredibly grateful to everyone who chose North Lurgan Playgroup and allowed us to be part of their children’s early years,” they continued. “A special thank you also goes to our committee members, who gave their time and support to the playgroup alongside their own busy lives. Your dedication has been greatly appreciated.
“To our staff, we cannot thank you enough for your hard work, dedication and, most importantly, the care and love you have given to the children over the years. Your contribution to North Lurgan Playgroup will never be forgotten.
“Thank you to everyone who has been part of our playgroup journey. We will always be grateful for the memories, friendships and support that have made North Lurgan Playgroup so special.”
It is understood that any parents who had expressed an interest in enrolling their children with the plygroup had been informed of the decision back in August, to allow them time to find suitable placements elsewhere.
According to records, the playgroup – based with the community centre on the Levin Road – has been a staple of the Lurgan area for more than 30 years. Its loss will be deeply felt across the community.
One person shared their deep regret upon learning the news, commenting: “I am devastated to hear this news. My three sons (now grown men!) all attended this playgroup. The care, attention and support they received from staff was outstanding.
“As a primary school teacher, I could not thank these ladies enough, they laid the foundation of my sons education and provided them with the tools to transition into school life. I wish all of the current staff the best of luck for their futures.”
Another echoed that same sentiment, adding: “I’m genuinely saddened to hear this news. My two children both attended North Lurgan Playgroup and no better place for them could I have found. Every single member of staff cared and nurtured my children as if they were their own. I will always be grateful to the staff for everything they did.”
