Remedial work is expected to take place over the summer months to solve a long-standing flooding problem in north Armagh.
Upper Bann Sinn Fein Assemblyman John O’Dowd had pressed Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon for an update on the situation in relation to “repeated severe flooding” on the Portadown Road in Lurgan, adjacent to the Gilpinstown Road.
The Minister confirmed that her officials were “aware of the drainage issue” in that area of Lurgan.
And she explained: “Initial investigations indicate there may be a partial blockage of the drainage system with localised flooding occurring during periods of intense rainfall, although this gradually disperses due to the system still being partially operational.”
Minister Mallon confirmed that is was hoped to find a solution to the problem in the not-too-distant future.
Responding to Mr O’Dowd’s question this week, she added: “Further investigatory work and has been commissioned to fully diagnose the problem, after which remedial works will be undertaken that are expected to be completed over the summer months.”
