Young people causing damage to vacant Lurgan school found ‘hiding in building that was on fire’

Three young people are being dealt with by police after being found hiding inside a vacant Lurgan building that was set alight.

Over the past week, Police in Lurgan have received a number of reports of young people causing damage on the old St Ronan’s site.

Staff and pupils of St Ronan’s moved to a new-build premises on St Michael’s site – on the Cornakinnegar Road – after four years of construction.

Their former home has since lay empty and, as such, open to anti-social behaviour.

On Thursday Lurgan NPT attended such a report to discover windows being broken and a fire alight in the building.

Three young persons were located hiding in one of the rooms and will be dealt with for a number of offences.

A police spokesperson said: “Not only were a number of offences committed, it is concerning that these young people were hiding in a building that was on fire.

“This site is not safe for young people to be on.

“Parents, please know where your children are at and that they are not putting themselves and/or others in danger.”
