Major £3m sewer improvement works in Armagh to be completed next summer

Extensive Armagh city sewer improvement work is set to be completed by late summer 2016.

The first phase of the £3million sewer improvements in the Barrack Street/Newry Road area has been successfully completed in advance of the final road reinstatement of the on-going Transport NI road realignment scheme.

Construction work is currently underway in in the Alexander Road area and will continue onto Railway Street commencing 8 June for two weeks and then onto the Lonsdale Road.

All major construction work in this area is due to be completed in July 2015.

Pipelaying on Railway Street will require lane closures for two weeks and involve extended working hours Monday to Friday and also Saturday and Sunday work.

A spokesman for NI Water said: “We recognise that the noise, vibration and general disruption associated with this type of construction has a greater impact on the local residential population.

“In order to provide local residents some respite from the construction work, night time working is not proposed unless exceptional circumstances arise on site.

“NI Water will communicate to the public via variable message signage, Traffic Watch NI website, letter drops to residents impacted and public displayed telephone number, as well as NI Water’s waterline e-mail address.

Detailed traffic management plans have been discussed and agreed with Transport NI to try to minimise the impact of these works in the main arterial route through Armagh and NI Water will continue to liaise closely with Transport NI and other utilities who are also working in the local area to minimise disruption throughout this contract.”

The work currently being carried out will allow for future development within Armagh city for the next 30 years.
