Armagh City and District Council has opened the tender process for the provision of a new archaeology themed play experience at the Navan Centre and Fort, Armagh I can reveal.
Opening today (Wednesday), July 30, the cost of the professional services tender is given as in the region of £200,000.
As we reported in February, as the district rate was being struck, the provision of the Navan facility was listed as one of the key financial priorities for the year ahead, the last before Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Councils merge next April.
The successful applicant has just three weeks to submit a bid for the design of an “archaeology play area of both an interior and exterior nature”.
The tender documentation states: “The archaeology play items need to be site specific to the Navan Fort and surrounding area. The equipment must be suitable for all ages and abilities. The interior should not require staff involvement but the exterior area will be designed to accommodate a role playing archaeologist/character. All elements must be interactive.”
The tender also covers the Armagh Visitor Information Centre/Craftswirl at 40 English Street, Armagh.
The plan there is for the development of the interior of the centre, to accommodate literature display within the guidelines of the NITB; for craft display and, the provision of a dedicated visitor information section on the immediate area of Armagh.
The deadline for submissions is 3pm on Wednesday, August 20.
The Navan Centre play experience follows the opening of the hugely successfully play area at the Palace Grounds, while opportunities to develop community play areas, particularly on a dual-use basis with local schools, are also budgeted for.
