Man arrested after fatal road traffic collision in Crossmaglen

A woman in her 20s has died following a single vehicle road traffic collision in Crossmaglen during the early hours of this morning (Sunday).

The collision occurred on the Newry Road shortly before 3.30am.

A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of a number of motoring offences and is currently in custody assisting police with their enquiries.

Anyone who was travelling on the Newry Road and who witnessed the collision is asked to contact local Police in Newry or the Collision Investigation Unit on the non-emergency number 101.

The Newry Road remains closed at this time and diversions are in place.

Sinn Fein councillor Terry Hearty has extended his sympathies to the family of the young woman who died.

“It’s heartbreaking to once again have south Armagh awakening to the news of another death on our roads, especially so soon after the area was rocked by tragedy with the loss of three young lives from across the district,” he said.

“In this case a bright young woman’s life has been cut tragically short. I cannot imagine the pain her family are going through.

“Details of what happened are still emerging but for now our thoughts and prayers are with another local family in anguish.

“I would plead with everyone getting behind the wheel of a car, especially our young people, to take extra care on our roads. The risks are simply not worth it.”
