Man arrested by police investigating Crossmaglen hit and run

Police investigating a hit and run road traffic collision in Crossmaglen have made an arrest.

The 20-year-old man was detained this morning on suspicion of a number of motoring offences.

Late this afternoon, police confirmed he had been interviewed and released on bail pending further enquiries.

Conall McCavitt, a world handball champion player from Cullyhanna, remains critically ill in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

He had been struck by a car, which left the scene, on Cardinal O’Fiaich Square before 6.20am.

St Patrick’s, Cullyhanna GAA club posted a message of support on thier Facebook page, which read: “Our entire club and community is wishing one of our brightest young stars Conall McCavitt all the best in the days ahead. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.”

Police, meanwhile, continue to appeal for anyone who was in the centre of Crossmaglen early yesterday morning and who witnessed the collision, or anyone with any information about the movements of the offending car or its occupants following the collision to contact officers in Newry on 101 quoting reference number 488 of 27/12/16.
