A Markethill business owner, who had their premises destroyed by a hammer-wielding thief, has called the incident “heartbreaking news during what should be a joyful season”.
The Phoneshop Markethill – based in the Fairgreen area of the town – was entered by a masked man wielding a hammer on the evening of Thursday, December 4.
A display case was smashed and a number of mobile phones were taken during the incident which occurred just before 5.30pm.
The business owner, Mack, took to social media to voice his dismay, commenting: “At a time of year when everyone is preparing to celebrate with their loved ones, we are devastated to share that our phone shop was robbed last night around 5:30pm.
“A masked man entered the shop and took around 15 phones, leaving us shaken and deeply saddened.
“What hurts even more is that a small child was inside the shop during the robbery. Although no one was physically harmed, the fear and shock of the moment have left a lasting impact on us.
“We work hard all year, especially during the festive season, hoping to bring good service and honest work to our community. To have something like this happen now is truly heart-breaking.

“If anyone was nearby at that time or noticed anything unusual, please reach out to us or the authorities. Even the smallest piece of information could help.
“Thank you to everyone who has checked in on us. Your support means the world, especially right now.”
The community have shown their support for the shaken proprietor, branding the incident as “disgusting” and a “disgrace”.
One person added: “F*****g Markethill, showing its ugly side again…I’m so angry to hear this. You are nice people who offer a very friendly service and do a great job. I always use you if there’s a problem.
“Please realise that this scum doesn’t represent the majority of our community. Keep going and don’t let this incident deter you. Thoughts and best wishes for the festive period.”

Police Sergeant Magill said: “Just before 5.30pm, a man dressed all in black and described as 5’8″ and of medium build, entered commercial premises in the Fairgreen Road area.
“The suspect who was carrying a hammer, smashed a display case and lifted a number of mobile phones, before leaving the shop in an unknown direction.
“Our enquiries are ongoing today, and we want to identify who was responsible and a motive.
Anyone who witnessed what happened or noticed suspicious behaviour in the area is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 1102 04/12/25.
“We would also be keen to hear from anyone who may have CCTV or mobile footage of the area shortly before and just after 5.30pm that we could review.”
