Two men armed with a hammer broke into a house in Markethill before assaulting a man inside on Saturday night.
Detectives are appealing for information and witnesses following a report of burglary in the Mountnab Road area.
It was reported that at around 10.15pm the two men, one of whom was carrying a hammer, gained entry to a house and carried out the vicious assault.
Both suspects were described as wearing dark clothing and balaclavas.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information including dash-cam, mobile or CCTV footage of the area or who may have witnessed suspicious activity during this time are asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 1549 of 17/01/26
