Police pursuing a suspected getaway car through Markethill arrested two men on Thursday afternoon.
The arrests came after a high‑speed chase towards the border was halted with the help of a PSNI helicopter, specialist officers and Garda checkpoints.
Detective Sergeant Johnston said officers carrying out an anti‑burglary operation became involved in a pursuit of a black VW Golf on the Gosford Road, Markethill, on Thursday, August 27.
“The vehicle made off towards the border at Newry, travelling at high speed,” he said.
“Officers from the Police Service’s Air Support Unit and Interceptors Team apprehended the suspects with assistance of local police. The arrests were aided by our colleagues from An Garda Síochána, who were also involved in the operation, and performed border checkpoints which prevented the suspects from fleeing the jurisdiction.”
A man in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of burglary and a number of driving offences, including dangerous driving.
A second man, in his 30s, was also arrested on suspicion of burglary.
Both remain in custody at this time, assisting police with enquiries.
Detective Sergeant Johnston added: “Enquiries are continuing, and we would appeal to anyone with any information which might assist, to contact police via 101 and quote reference number 931 of 29/08/26.”
