Planning approval for new and redeveloped leisure facilities in Portadown, have been formally approved by Environment Minister Mark H Durkan, as Armagh I first predicted last month.
The application site is located on lands at The People’s Park and Northway Tunnel between Woodhouse Street and Obin’s Street.
A new pavilion, multi-use games area, grass pitches, a synthetic pitch, play area, car park and lighting are among the features included in the application.
The DOE Planning consulted Craigavon Borough Council on Monday, and no objections to the proposal were raised by them.
The SDLP Minister described the proposed facilities as “welcome news for the local area bringing new leisure facilities the whole community can enjoy.”
He said that Craigavon Borough Council has secured almost £5.5m for the Shared Process and Community Engagement Project (SPACE) from the Special European Programmes Body (SEUPB) Peace III Priority 2.1 Contributing to a Shared Society and Creating Shared Public Services.
“In addition to the three jobs that will be created as a result of the project there will also be construction jobs during the development phase.”
Mr Durkan added: “This application was turned around within six months which meets the Programme for Government target for large scale investments.
“I have pledged to create a fast, fair and fit for purpose planning system that creates a better environment and a stronger economy. This development helps to do this.”
