Motion tabled to reverse Craigavon council’s 365-day union flag decision

A rescinding motion to overturn the recent decision to fly the union flag 365 days at Craigavon civic centre has been put forward by Sinn Fein.

The motion will be debated at the mid-monthly meeting of council tonight.

Councillor Gemma Mc Kenna, who will be proposing the motion, said: “In the last few weeks of Craigavon council, the people of this borough require leadership and a common sense approach.

“The decision to fly the union flag 365 days  is contrary to the councils duty to adhere to equality and good relations best practice in its daily work . The decision ignored legal advice, our own equality scheme and the consultants’ EQIA report findings.

“This process has to date cost in excess of £10,000 of rate payers money. It has also left council open to judicial review which if upheld could cost thousands of pounds; a cost which should be shouldered by those councillors who acted so recklessly.

“It’s not too late for Unionist  politicians to show leadership on this issue and rescind this decision. If they don’t they are exposing  themselves and this council to both the courts and the Local Government Auditor.”
