Detectives from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team have launched a murder investigation following the death of a man in Downpatrick on Sunday, August 10.
Police were called to a property in the Marian Park area at around 12pm, where the body of a man was discovered.
A 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody assisting with enquiries.
Superintendent Norman Haslett said the investigation is at an early stage but confirmed detectives suspect the death may be linked to a serious assault earlier that morning in St Patrick’s Avenue.
In that incident, a priest was reportedly attacked inside a church at around 10.10am.
Police say a man entered the building and struck the priest on the head with a bottle before leaving.
The priest was taken to hospital with a head injury, where he remains in a serious condition.
Detective Chief Inspector McBurney described it as a “completely shocking and brutal attack” and appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
Anyone who can assist police is asked to contact 101, quoting reference 713 or 543 of 10/08/25, or to submit information via the PSNI’s online reporting form. Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
