The countdown is on for the opening of Newry’s new multi-million pound leisure centre – and we must say it’s looking spectacular!
The development of Newry Leisure Centre (NLC) is now at final completion stage and Northern Ireland’s latest state-of-the-art leisure complex will open in late April in the heart of Newry City.
It is also creating another 14 jobs for the area.
With the development of the new Leisure centre phase 1, the existing swimming pool at Clanrye Avenue will close at 5.30pm next Sunday, March 22.
Phase one of the new Leisure Centre will offer a wide range of supervised swimming activities and water features, which includes:
• An eight lane main Swimming Pool
• Teaching Pool
• Leisure Pool with separate toddler area and exciting water features
• An exciting spiral flume slide providing loads of fun
• An exclusive Health Suite including: Spa Pool, Steam Room, Sauna, Experience Shower and Heated loungers
• Viewing gallery with Olympic standard seating
The new Newry Leisure centre will offer increased opening hours, a wider variety of leisure features whilst maintaining a highly competitive price offering.
Newry Leisure Centre Swim Academy will follow the STA International Learn to Swim Programme. Using pupil friendly badges and certificates, this programme guides pupils from their very first moments in the pool right through to pre-competition stage.
There will be more classes on offer that will cater for a wider age range, ability levels and will be programmed during convenient family times, such as after school, evening and weekends.
Councillor Daire Hughes, Mayor of Newry and Mourne District Council, said: “I am delighted to have witnessed the development of the new Newry Swimming Pool.
“This fantastic development will provide our rate payers with a state of the art facility which will be the envy of other Council areas throughout Ireland. I look forward to the opening of the new pool and to many years of enjoyment this new facility will provide. I am delighted that an additional 14 jobs have been created with the development of the new Leisure Centre.”
Mr Eddy Curtis, Chief Executive of Newry and Mourne District Council, added: “We wanted to create a modern, high spec interior that will stand the test of time and promote both accessibility and functionality, whilst also providing value for money for our ratepayers and customers.”
The official public opening ceremony will take place over the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, April 25 and 26, where customers will be able to enjoy a swim experience and entertainment throughout the weekend.
The centre will commence its new regular opening times from Monday, April 27.
Further details will be released in due course with specific times and activities which will take place on the official public opening days. Customers can keep up to date with progress of the project by visiting: Facebook: www.facebook.com/pages/Newry-Leisure-Centre/1675453006015715
