A Newry company has been fined for exporting contaminated waste plastic destined for China.
Regen Waste Ltd, pleaded guilty and was fined £500 today (Tuesday) at Belfast Magistrates’ Court.
On 7 February 2014 officers from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) conducted an inspection of a container due to be exported from Belfast Port.
A second container, also due to be exported to China, was inspected on 11 February 2014.
Both containers were found to contain mixed waste and were being exported in contravention of the EU Waste Shipment Regulations 1013/2006.
NIEA proactively targets waste shipments to identify illegal exports in order to prevent their export becoming an environmental burden on other nations.
