Police have confirmed that a body has been recovered from the river in the Albert Basin area of the city.
The area of the Albert Basin – across from the Quays Shopping Centre – from the William Street Bridge towards Fathom Line, is currently closed as a result.
Police have confirmed that a post-mortem will take place in due course.
Newry and Armagh MP, Daire Hughes, said: “There is an ongoing incident at the Albert Basin in Newry, with the area closed from William Street Bridge to Fathom Line.
“I am asking everyone to follow police instructions, avoid the area and use alternative routes. I am in contact with the police and we will provide updates as more information becomes available.
“It is vital that we give the emergency services the time and space to carry out their work. I encourage the community to remain patient during this time.”
Sadly, it is the second such tragedy in the same vicinity in just a matter of weeks.
Earlier this month, John O’Brien tragically lost his life when he was struck by a lorry.
