Bus drivers are to have perspex screens installed in their vehicles to protect them from coronavirus.
The news has been confirmed by Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon.
And it has been welcomed by Newry and Armagh MLA Liz Kimmins, who said they would help on a health and wellbeing protection basis.
Said the Sinn Fein MLA: “I had been contacted by Translink bus drivers locally at the start of the week who had said they had not been given the proper guidance and PPE on their buses.
“I subsequently contacted Department for Infrastructure (DfI) Minister Nichola Mallon regarding the issue and since then I am pleased to have been advised that, as a result, drivers will now be provided with buses that have perspex screens fitted for the protection of drivers when dealing with the public.
“This is to be welcomed.
“I now hope that further guidance and measures will be made available for drivers who are key workers.
“They are working in extraordinary circumstances and therefore it is essential they are able to work in safe conditions.”
