Camlough man Shea called to be a lifesaver after Bobby donation drive

A young Camlough man who signed up to become a bone marrow donor at a Bobby Browne donation drive has been called to become a lifesaver.

Shea Griffin travelled to London to donate his bone marrow after adding himself to the register, inspired by nine-year-old Bessbrook boy Bobby Browne.

Bobby, who was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2022, underwent a bone marrow transplant last year.

His family had previously been appealing for the public to register as bone marrow donors to help fight the condition.

In June, Bobby rang the bell at the Children’s Hospital in Belfast, declaring himself free of cancer.

The ‘Find Bobby a Match’ Facebook page, which was launched to help save Bobby’s life, announced last week that Shea had been called forward.

They said: “We are absolutely delighted to share with you that young Camlough man Shea Griffin who signed up to become a donor at one of Bobby’s drives was called up to become a lifesaver. Shea is currently in London donating his bone marrow to help save a life!

“We wish him all the best and pray that all goes well for the recipient. Please keep them in your prayers.

“Without people like Shea and Bobby’s selfless donor many people would have a devastating outcome. We will never be able to thank Bobby’s donor enough for what they have done for him and us, his family.”

The family also appealed to the public to keep registering as bone marrow donors, saying, “Please continue to register if you haven’t already. You could be a match for someone needing a donor and save a family from heartache.”

You can register as a donor here https://www.dkms.org.uk/register-now.
