A Newry man who stole a remote from a Sky kiosk has been handed a £75 fine and ordered to pay compensation of £25.
Court heard the 33-year-old was captured on CCTV opening a glass cabinet and placing the item in his pocket before leaving.
Christopher McGrath, of Cowan Street, pleaded guilty to theft at the city’s Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
It was heard that on April 2, at 2pm, police attended Buttercrane shopping centre regarding the alleged theft of a remote from the Sky kiosk.
Staff explained a grey remote valued at £25 had been stolen.
Officers viewed CCTV which showed a male open the glass cabinet at the kiosk before placing the remote in his pocket and walking away.
On May 7, McGrath attended the police station with his solicitor and made full admissions.
Defence counsel stated: “In May he received a suspended sentence for a similar matter but this offence predates the imposition of that.”
The defendant was ordered to pay a fine of £75, along with the offender’s levy of £15.
In addition, McGrath was also made subject to a compensation order for £25 to be paid to Sky.
