A book of condolence has been opened at Mayobridge GAC after the death of one of its members in a road traffic collision at Newry.
The 12-year-old had been a passenger on a buggy which was in collision with a black Toyota Hilux car on the Flagstaff Road, shortly before 3pm on Saturday.
A 14-year-old girl sustained a broken leg and was taken to hospital.
The child who died has been named locally as Nicole Fegan.
Mayobridge GAC said they were “greatly shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic death of our cherished Scór na nÓg member and camogie, football and handball player Nicole Fegan”.
They paid tribute on social media and offered “sincere and heartfelt sympathy to her grieving parents Margo and Cathal, brothers Jamie and Jason and extended family circle”.
The club has also provided the opportunity for local people to add their own words of comfort.
“A book of condolence has been opened in the Social Club which will be open all day for anyone wishing to express their sympathy,” according to the club.
Down GAA also revealed Sunday’s Scór final was being cancelled. mark of respect.
The official County Twitter account shared details: “Owing to the tragic death of Nicole Fegan,the South Down Scór Committee along with Co Cultural Officer have decided to postpone today’s South Down Final rescheduled Sun 26th 4pm. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Fegan Family and Mayobridge Club.”
Nicole was a past pupil of St Patrick’s Primary School in Mayobridge and staff there have also said they were “heartbroken” to learn of the tragic news.
They also paid tribute on social media, saying: “As educators we are fortunate to teach many wonderful children but Nicole was such a special girl.
“We have memories of her kindness and her willingness to contribute to the life of the school through her musical ability, her sporting talents, her desire to do her best at all times and her beautiful smile.
“We offer our heartfelt condolences to her loving family.”
Police are continuing to appeal for anyone with information to come forward.
