
A woman in her 50s has died in a house fire in south Armagh.
Emergency services were tasked to the scene of the blaze in the the Bearna Park area of Meigh early on Saturday morning, June 21.
Fire and police crews were called shortly after 8.30am.
A police spokesperson said: “Police can confirm that a woman aged in her 50s has died following a fire at a house in the Bearna Park this morning, Saturday 21st June.
“Police received a report of the fire at approximately 8.40am, and attended alongside colleagues from other emergency services.
“Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service extinguished the fire but, sadly the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
“A young male was taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries.
“Officers are continuing to conduct enquiries into the cause of the fire and are appealing to anyone who may have footage that could assist with the investigation, to contact detectives and refrain from sharing online.”
Sinn Féin MP for Newry and Armagh, Dáire Hughes, has spoken of the community’s shock at the news.
“Our sincerest condolences to the family, friends and neighbours of the individual who tragically lost their life in a house fire this morning in Meigh,” said Mr Hughes.
“There is a palpable sense of shock in the community at this horrific incident.”
Sinn Fein MLA Liz Kimmins added: “Terribly sad news this morning as we learn of a fatality as a result of a house fire in Meigh.
“I have spoken with PSNI who remain at the scene.
“My deepest condolences to the family of the deceased at this very difficult time.”
