Construction begins on £20m Quays Shopping Centre extension

Construction has finally got underway on a multi-million pound extension at the Quays Shopping Centre in Newry.

Workers moved in on site to begin Phase 5 of the extension which is now estimated to cost in the region of £20million.

Hundreds of new construction and retail jobs will be created as a result of the work by contractor O’Hare & McGovern Limited.

It will represent a stand-alone retail development and comprise six retail units together with three restaurants.

There will also be a multi-storey car park – with 600 spaces – with link and a bridge constructed to the existing Quays shopping and leisure cerntre.

New access for motorists would be provided to Drumalane Road.

Finals plans for the development were approved by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council in January.

There is also a sixth phase planned for office accommodation at a cost in excess of £10 million.

This has been in the pipeline for some considerable time and will be known as Fisher House.
