Council has issued a statement on current upgrade and repair works at Newry Leisure Centre – and have responded to criticism over the state of gym equipment.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council say works around the swimming pool hall and village changing areas are “progressing as planned”.
To date all tiles within both pools have been replaced and the next phase of the programme is the refilling of water.
The hydraulic ram within the movable floor of the main pool has now been repaired and reinstalled, both marking significant progress for the project.
Floor tile replacement throughout the pool hall walkways and changing areas, along with essential maintenance to equipment in the pool hall, health suite and plant room is ongoing.
The expected completion and phased reopening remains January 2025.
A Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of ongoing issues with some gym equipment, which unfortunately have broken down within the same short period of time.
“All reported faults have been forwarded to our service provider, who is actively working on a repair schedule. This is subject to the availability of required bespoke parts. We are working closely with our service provider to ensure that necessary repairs are carried out in the coming weeks. As our customers will be aware, some equipment has been repaired over recent days.
“Our qualified staff remain available to assist all users with alternative exercises to incorporate into their fitness programs while any specific piece of equipment is temporarily unavailable.
“Following an issue with hot water in the customer showers we are pleased to advise this has also been resolved.
“The Council is committed to ensuring these issues are addressed promptly and efficiently. We thank our users for their patience and understanding during this time and will continue to provide updates through our website, NMD Be Active app, social media channels, and local press.
“Thank you for your continued support as we work to maintain and enhance the facilities at Newry Leisure Centre.”
