Councillor condemns ‘vile’ sectarian graffiti on Poyntzpass railway bridge

Sinn Féin councillor Oonagh Magennis has condemned sectarian graffiti sprayed on a railway bridge along the towpath just off Gambles Road in Poyntzpass.

The offensive slogans were reported to Cllr Magennis by a local resident on Tuesday night and was subsequently raised with both the PSNI and Translink.

She said Translink staff were on site “first thing this morning” to arrange for its removal, while police have attended and will be increasing patrols in the area.

The slogans make derogatory references to Palestine and Sinn Féin while showing its support for loyalist paramilitaries.

Cllr Magennis said: “Poyntzpass is a community with strong community relations, and this vile display of sectarian hatred is completely unacceptable.

“I commend Translink for acting so quickly and thank the resident who reported it.

“There is absolutely no place for this hatred in our society, and it must be condemned by everyone.”
