A Newry man who punched a male who tried to help his girlfriend home has been convicted in his absence.
Court heard that during interview the 22-year-old admitted to pushing the injured party who was helping his girlfriend in a “weird way”.
Dylan Bagnal, 22, of Glen Villas, was convicted in his absence of common assault at Newry Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
Prosecution outlined that on December 23, of 2018, police received a report from the injured party who claimed to have been assaulted by the defendant.
He said that the previous day he had been assisting a female friend home.
Whilst in a taxi line on Canal Street the injured party was punched by an unknown male.
He was unconscious briefly and when he got back up, he was informed by another friend that his attacker had been Bagnal, the boyfriend of the female he had been helping home.
When interviewed, the defendant said he had been at the taxi line and admitted to pushing the injured party as he was helping his girlfriend in a “weird way”.
District Judge Eamonn King convicted the defendant and ordered that he pay a fine of £200, along with the offender’s levy of £15.
