A former electrical store in Newry – along with a neighbouring shop and houses – could be demolished and altered to make way for a new apartments complex.
The earmarked properties are located at 12-14 Canal Street and are in a derelict state.
But Newry-based Glena Developments Ltd is hoping that is about to change and has made a formal application.
The plans have been lodged with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council for consideration.
The hope is to win council blessing for the partial demolition, extension and alteration to create a total of 19 apartments and two houses.
The development, according to Construction Information Services, would represent an investment in excess of £500,000.
The properties – which stretch to three storeys in height – had previously been put up for sale at auction with a reserve price of £25,000 attached.
Number 12 Canal Street was previously an electrical goods shop – Home Electrics – with storage above. Its neighbouring number 14 was a three-bedroom, mid-terraced residential property. The site also includes residential units over retail space.
All are in a serious state of disrepair and the plans by Glena Developments Ltd, if given the go-ahead, will transform the eyesore site to provide modern and stylish apartments in a sought-after city centre location.
The application – the latest in a number of substantial apartments developments for Newry – is due to be publicly advertised next week.
