Discovery of live ammunition in Newry ‘deeply worrying’

The discovery of live ammunition close to a community facility in Newry has been described as “deeply worrying”.

The ammunition was uncovered by people doing some work in the vicinity of the Whitegates area of the city.

It has since been handed over to police to investigate.

Newry City councillor Charlie Casey said: “This area is very popular with local children and families and to think that someone would leave a bag containing live rounds of ammunition for children to find is a very worrying development.

“Whoever is responsible for this has again shown no regard for the local community.

The Sinn Féin representative added: “The criminals behind this need to get off the back of our communities and leave people to live their lives without worrying about what their children may find.”
