Disgraceful attack on firefighters in Newry condemned

Fire service night

An attack on firefighters responding to an emergency call in the Carnagat area of Newry this week has been condemned as “disgraceful and dangerous”.

Those involved targeted the Fire and Rescue Service while they were carrying out their duties, an incident which has been described as putting lives at risk and causing fear within the local community.

Sinn Féin councillor Aidan Mathers said there was “absolutely no excuse for targeting emergency services”.

“This was a disgraceful and dangerous attack that put lives at risk and caused fear in our community,” he said.

“Our firefighters serve with courage and professionalism and deserve to do their job safely.”

Cllr Mathers linked the incident to a wider pattern of anti-social behaviour, pointing to a series of recent attacks on Translink services, including one on Sunday night.

“This is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” he added.

He confirmed that meetings are planned with community groups, police and other agencies next week to discuss how to prevent further attacks.

“Sinn Féin will work with all partners to ensure those responsible are held to account and that our emergency services are protected,” he said.
