Donna Hillen, Senior Residential Support Worker at Cloughreagh House is just one of many Southern Trust employees who will be making the most of Christmas Day at work – rather than home.
While it won’t be her first Christmas Day on the job, it will be her first at Cloughreagh House – and she can’t wait to experience it with the residents she cares for all year long.
Of the winter period Donna said: “Whilst it has been challenging during this time with referrals, medications, audits etc, it has also been rewarding as you get to know the residents and interact with them on a daily basis.
“During the Christmas period we are aware that it can be quite an emotional time for some residents as they might have lost a loved one or maybe have no family
members around them.
“Christmas Day is slightly different to any other day in the home as we arrange for Santa to bring in presents for the residents and also have a wonderful Christmas Dinner prepared.
“Christmas Day is still very busy as senior staff have medications to do and oversee the day the day running of the home.
“It is a joyous day with Christmas music playing, opening presents and reminiscing about how Christmas has changed from when the residents were children.
“There is also the possibility that we may have to accept an emergency admission into the home during Christmas Day.
“This is actually my first Christmas Day that I have worked whilst being in Cloughreagh House as I would normally work Boxing Day, I am intrigued to find out how the residents enjoy the day and to reminisce with them.”
