Driver arrested ‘composing text message’ with engine running and smoke coming from bonnet

'The driver submitted to a preliminary breath test and provided a reading of 124 which is nearly four times the legal limit'

A person has been arrested for drink driving after being found behind the wheel of a car with smoke billowing from the bonnet while attempting to compose a text message.

The incident occurred on the morning of Saturday December 27, 2025 at 10.15am when Local Policing Teams from Ardmore PSNI received a report of a possible drink driver in Hill Street, Newry.

A police spokesperson said the team attended and located the vehicle in question parked up, with the keys in the ignition, the engine running, smoke coming from the bonnet and the driver sitting in the driver’s seat attempting to compose a text message with great difficulty.

They added: “The driver submitted to a preliminary breath test and provided a reading of 124 which is nearly four times the legal limit!”

The driver was arrested and is currently assisting Police with enquiries in custody.

Said a PSNI spokesperson: “Our thanks go to the members of the public who reported this incident.

“The message remains the same: Never ever drink and drive.”
