Elderly resident in Newry have been targeted by thieves – and in some cases, during the day.
Concerns have been raised at the swell in criminal activity in the Newry city area, especially around the Dominic Street and Raymond Kelly Park areas.
Chairperson of Newry Mourne and Down Council Charlie Casey is urging vigilance.
“An elderly couple’s home at the High Walk in Dominic Street has been burgled in broad daylight,” the Sinn Fein councillor explained.
“This follows the scamming of a lady in the Raymond Kelly Park.”
Councillor Casey said incidents like these “heighten fear and concern within communities, particularly for our older most vulnerable residents”.
He added: “Those engaged in these selfish criminal acts care about nothing only themselves.
“I would urge everyone to be extra vigilant, to watch out for any suspicious behaviour. These criminals must be apprehended and face the full rigours of the law.
“I would ask that anyone who might have information in relation to these specific incidents to contact the Police.
“Also please ensure never to let anyone into your house without first seeing proper ID. If in doubt call the PSNI Quick Check Scheme on 101.”
