Fundraiser launched in memory of Newry Muay Thai fighter following sudden passing

Nicky Cunningham from Newry

A fundraiser has been launched in memory of a Newry Muay Thai fighter who passed away suddenly last weekend.

Nicky Cunningham, who was a courageous young fighter at the Evolve Muay Thai club in the city, died last suddenly.

He was laid to rest in Monks Hill Cemetery following his funeral at St Mary’s on Thursday, however, since his passing the community who knew and loved Nicky have rallied behind his family.

Nicky was beloved son of Tom and Teresa, and much-loved brother of Stephen and the late Darren RIP.

A fundraiser has been launched by Nicky’s Muay Thai coach, Shane Mcilroy, to help “lighten the load for his parents”.

Shane wrote: “[Nicky] trained, he fought, he won, true warrior with a the heart of a lion, always had his demons but the ring was where he let it out.

“Muay Thai was his true love, it’s what kept him going; he always needed a goal to strive for. He was a champion – my champion – unfortunately Nicky lost his fight.

“Life is such a cruel thing and if we lighten the load for his parents to bear at this tragic time by raising some funds and highlighting the need for mental health awareness, maybe Nicky’s life will not have been in vain. Rest easy brother.”

You can donate to the GoFundMe here.

Nicky will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his mother, father, brother and sister-in-law Kirsty, aunts, uncles, cousins and entire family circle and friends. Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on his soul.
