A Newry man who was moments from death has awakened in a hospital bed and told his loved ones, “I’m not going anywhere”.
The defiant and truly remarkable Ryan Cinnamond was rushed to hospital last Thursday following an aortic bleed above his heart. He underwent emergency cardiac surgery which lasted 10-hours.
There was more chance of him dying than there was of survival.
For Ryan, dying was clearly not an option – for the second time in his life!
In 2010, at 15 years of age, Ryan suffered a ruptured aortic aneurysm in my stomach. He was given a 10% chance to live.
He underwent surgery which lasted 11 hours and the following day had his legs amputated through the knees to save his life.
Posting on social media, from his hospital bed on Tuesday night, Ryan wrote: “I had no choice in undergoing the operation as I would’ve suffered a fatal heart attack if not.
“I was thrown straight into theatre after being rushed to the Royal in an ambulance from Daisy Hill.
“I never realised the seriousness of this surgery, especially the fact that there was a higher chance that I wouldn’t survive.
“I opened my eyes and called my mum, my sister Megan and my girlfriend Emily to see how they were. They cried as they heard my voice. I told them to wise up – that i’m all good and that I’m not going anywhere.
“The pain and agony I am going through on day to day basis would break you. I separate myself from the pain. I enjoy the pain.
“I know that this won’t last forever. I will stand again. I will walk again. I will get back to helping people achieve their physical goals and also their mental ones through Limbitless Fitness.
“I don’t want sympathy. Life is good. Everyday you wake up, you have a purpose to be living.”
Ryan went on to thank his family – Dad John, Mum Peggy, Shaun, Danny, Megan, Aaron, Conor, Denise, Danika, Stefan, Nanny Teresa and my nieces Sophie, Pippa and Éala.
“I wouldn’t be the person I am today without you all,” he added. “My amazing girlfriend Emily Buller who has always been there by my side. I’m so glad life brought you to me.
“Also to the whole community – friends, family, Advanced Dental Care Banbridge and the fantastic staff in Daisy Hill Hospital and the Royal Hospital in Belfast. I wouldn’t have done this alone. See you soon.”
