An inquest into the death of a young Newry woman, who passed away on the street while waiting on an ambulance to arrive, is to take place at the end of January.
Thirty-nine-year-old Jody Keenan died at Trevor Street in Newry on April 10, 2022.
Ms Keenan, a classroom assistant, had met friends for a Saturday night out in Newry before taking ill on her way home.
It had been reported at the time that she died while waiting over 45 minutes for an ambulance to arrive from Belfast due to a shortage of cover locally.
Her friends, it was reported, phoned 999, but were told there would be a wait for help to arrive as “the only crew available was in Belfast”.
Ms Keenan’s mother, Ursula, made her way to the scene after being informed by police and performed CPR on her daughter with a call handler.
Sadly, she died before the ambulance arrived.
A preliminary hearing was held at Laganside Court on Monday afternoon (September 21) as proceedings officially got underway.
During the brief hearing, counsel for the Coroner’s Office Mr Daly said there were two reports by experts on behalf of the next of kin.
Counsel for the family, Ms Quinlivan, indicated one of these should have been received by the office of the Coroner today, while the next of kin “do not propose to rely on or serve” the second report.
It was considered that a further preliminary hearing would be required to review progress.
“It should be a very quick brief review in any event,” said Coroner Fee, who scheduled, with agreement of all parties, to hold that hearing on December 9.
That will take place ahead of the formal inquest then getting underway during the course of the week of January 25 to 29.
