Jollye good! Plans submitted for new surgery next to popular Newry pet store

The application seeks approval for a surgery over two floors for human healthcare, a separate extension for the pet store storage, additional parking and landscaping

Plans have been submitted for the construction of a new surgery next to a pet store in Newry in response to customer interest.

Jollyes – adjacent to Fiveways service station – could be set to see a substantial two-storey surgery built next to its existing premises if plans are approved, together with an additional extension to the rear of the pet store for storage.

Submitted to Newry, Mourne and Down District Council in the name of Mr Colm Meehan, the application seeks approval for a surgery over two floors for human healthcare, a separate extension for the pet store storage, additional parking and landscaping.

The proposals take in a 0.59 hectare brownfield site that previously occupied a two-storey house at 91 Armagh Road.

Plans indicate that the surgery’s ground floor would comprise a lobby, waiting area, reception, office, two stores, a treatment room, X-ray room, three consultation rooms, staircase and elevator and toilet facilities.

The first floor would comprise two further consultation rooms, a meeting room, kitchen, toilets and a changing room.

The application indicates that there would be some waste resulting from the operation of a medical centre including, for example, “bodily fluids, healthcare equipment, PPE”.

However, disposal would be managed by a private contractor, Stericycle UK.

Providing rationale for the proposed development, a design and access statement prepared by Bell Rolston explains: “The development of the site is due to a need for additional medial (medical) arising from enquires made to the applicant.”

It adds: “Furthermore, this site is a convenient location for a healthcare facility, given the existing pharmacy within the Fiveways complex.”

The floorspace of the existing structure would be increased by 921 sqm, once complete.

The site is immediately adjacent to a local shopping centre, opposite Damolly Retail Park and off a protected route with ample parking provision, however, 27 new parking spaces would be created to the front of the proposed surgery.

An ambulance bay is also proposed.

Plans are to be advertised shortly.
